“Your partner’s words are verbally and emotionally abusive. Your partner acknowledges regret for using these hurtful words with you. Yet, you still hurt. Why is that?” Ever wonder?
We see this all the time. One party feels wronged by the other and an apology does not evoke healing in the injury of the abused. Some people will say that the apology wasn’t sincere, and others will say the injured hasn’t healed from within. In abusive relationships, it is often both.

“I want what I want because I want it, and I’m not letting up until you give it to me. I will badger you even when you are not aware (so I think) to wear you down into submission. Deep down inside I know you seek to please me, thus I will help you change your mind so you can make me happy.” Sound familiar?
If you are in an abusive relationship, I know you know this one. It’s the relentless pursuit of what your partner seeks irrespective of your wishes.

Have you ever noticed how some apologies make you feel worse after getting them? You thought you were getting the apology you so longed to have; but you got an excuse, justification and campaign to extend your compassion.
Maybe that’s why you feel worse, because instead of getting the understanding you wanted for yourself, you are being asked to give it at a time that it’s simply not for the giving from where you stand.
