Finding You Behind the Destructive Chatter

By Dr. Jeanne King, Ph.D.

People often ask me how do you reclaim your life after being abused. Actually those aren’t their exact words. Sometimes the words are how do you stop thinking of yourself through the eyes of your batterer? Or, how do I get my confidence back?

I believe that while we are “under the spell” of, or saying “yes” to an abuser, we become on many levels as we are defined by that person. When we say “no” to that, we remain open to being all we are and potentially can be.

When I teach patients biofeedback and the practice of meditation, they reconnect to who and what they are before and beyond being battered. I’ve never seen it not work. It’s like giving a dry plant water or a hungry child food.

Showing someone how to linger in the quiet space between his or her thoughts is a powerful gift to give. Essentially, it’s giving someone a way back to themselves.

Much more on this ….. to come.
