Many people think domestic abuse is something that affects the young. We see images of domestic violence illustrating bruises and injuries to women in their twenties and thirties. The stories covered in the media look at young families afflicted by family violence. Women being hit, thrown to the ground, ragged and raped… with bruises, welts and scares.
What about the masses of women* in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s? Do you think as women mature they outgrown the chances of being in one of these nasty relationships? I don’t.

A turning point insight for people in domestic abuse therapy comes with their understanding the distinction between battering and anger.
They may say, “If battering is off the table and no longer acceptable in my relationship, then what do I do with my anger?” For crying out loud, we all get angry, right? That’s part of being a human being.
But, the issue at hand here is the implied relationship between anger and battering. Are they the same? How are they different?

Life in an abusive relationship is painful. You feel oppressed, depressed and down right lifeless. It is as though the very spirit that glows from within is quashed.
You walk on eggshells when you are with the person that abuses you. There is no continuity…there is no stability. Rather, between you and this person, there is a state of flux in the context of huge hurts and a magnetic symbiotic connection.
