Accountability is a core concept to integrate in domestic abuse counseling. However, at first, it can be hard to wrap one’s brain around its meaning when it comes to feelings.
Verbal abusers are notorious for spewing their verbal rampage upon their partners to get them to own how they are falling short. For example, in his/her eyes, you are the “lousy housekeeper,” “fat slob,” “filthy pig,” from time to time when he comes home and things are not as he desires.

Parental alienation comes with some unique challenges, many of which are in the most unexpected places. You might assume that living with the loss of your relationship with your children is the most horrific thing you can experience. While this is true, the story doesn’t end when you reunite with them.

In providing domestic abuse counseling to couples in abusive relationships, I have noticed a subtle yet significant communication pattern that alerts me to the underlying dynamics moment-to-moment. I call it “talking at” vs. “talking with” your partner.
